Habitat for Humanity was one of the greatest events I had the fortune to participate in. During this event, we were asked to gear up with construction clothes, tools, and work on a house, which would soon become a family’s new home. Amongst the tasks performed, we installed new weatherboards, framed the windows, and utilized heavy-duty constructions machines such as an electric saw. These tasks did not only require precision and diligence, but also teamwork and resiliency. It taught me more than I imagined, because by having the opportunity to deliver community assistance in a very physical (and rewarding) way, I discovered strengths that were otherwise unknown to me. For instance, climbing on a twenty-foot ladder despite my monumental fear of heights.
The UBSDM is fortunate to have a highly motivated group of students, who are constantly willing to help the public in any way. This image of our school that the students “build,” ultimately becomes a great motivation for the public to want to become part of our dental family. It’s all about providing service, regardless of the means, and having fun while doing it. After all, hammering nails into the side of a house is a great way to relieve the stresses of dental school.
