Lunch and Learn Advocacy Academy

This year we kicked off with our brand new Advocacy Lunch and Learn Series, offering students the chance to hear about the current dental issues effecting our profession each month from respective professionals and advocates. Our goal in launching this monthly “Advocacy Series” was to not only continue to build our representation here at Buffalo, but most importantly we aim and desire to keep our students and colleagues informed so that they can represent and carry themselves as educated and informed individuals, ready to protect their profession.

The Advocacy team has already presented on Licensure and some of the future ethical issues surrounding the live patient exams. As fortunate as we are to be dental students and aspiring professionals, we often forget that there is more to hitting the ground running than just obtaining your 4-year DDS degree. Understanding and being informed about licensure is more important than ever. At Buffalo, the ethical issues surrounding the WREB are a very hot topic as we decide how we as a school want to proceed in the most appropriate manner for our students and their prospective patients by eliminating the ethical controversies.

The October presentation was on the importance of community water fluoridation. Dr. Yepes, our new public health faculty, presented to over 125 students! Our future series presentation topics include dental spas, amalgam, mid level providers and student debt. We see each of these topics essential to not only our education but also to the future and longevity of our profession.
