Arthur Bigsby III - Class of 2017

1: Hometown: Cazenovia

I am a native of Central New York, our great state’s finest region. In fact I have always felt CNY (specifically Syracuse) should be New York’s capital, due to both central location and the kind personality’s of the areas inhabitants. I grew up in Cazenovia (a suburb of Syracuse) as a Laker. You may know my town by the picturesque lake and surrounding scenery or the award winning sports teams. If you ever plan on passing through I can lend you the key to the town.

2: Undergrad: St. John Fisher College

St. John Fisher College is a small Catholic school located in the heart of Rochester NY. Fisher’s Cardinals are starting to gain foothold in Buffalo, in fact the class of 2017 has four alumni alone. This may decrease in future classes after Dr. Brown realizes what he has done. While at SJFC I majored in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I also played football while in school. I really loved my time at Fisher and I made some great friends; most importantly Fisher’s education allowed me to sneak into UB’s SDM.

3: B28: Blue Lights

By far my favorite dental instruments at this point in my dental career are B28’s Blue Lights. These instruments first caught my attention the day of our class’s first direct practical. I realized that blue lights are an extremely rare item and much like a Honus Wagner baseball card these are horded and protected with one’s life the day of a practical. I also really appreciate the collectors value our Blue Lights posses as they were used by the first class at Buffalo in 1892.

4: Favorite moments of dental school

This is a tough question. I have had many memorable moments thus far. There was the day our class sang Happy Birthday to Dan Caurso against his will each class period. Or that time a classmate (unnamed due to HIPPA liability) literally passed out on me in the middle of my gross final. Or more embarrassing moments like my first day in Perio. Rotations. This was my first day working in a live patient’s mouth (by patient I mean forced student volunteer and by working I mean counting permanent teeth) and I was extremely excited. After counting the maxillary arch’s 15 teeth I took a brake to collect myself. As I looked up I saw Dr. Hatton, one of our schools top oral surgeons walking toward me in full surgical PPE. I tried to play it cool, and gave him a classic head nod as I was sitting down to count the mandible’s 15 teeth. However I drastically undershot my chair and did not stick the landing. As I lay on the floor thinking thoughts we had not discussed in Dr. Browns Into to Professionalism class Dr. Hatton called me something to the effect an idiot. While those memories are vivid nothing is more memorable than moving into my new apartment. I say this because I have moved in with five great guys: Freaky Fingers, The Kid, HiBOBchi, Poos, and Noldaddy. I remember the first day moving in was extremely hectic as we had a Perio midterm and Direct practical to prepare for. However we made the best of it and since then we have had great times both in and out of school.
