Are you sure you want to be a dentist?

It feels like yesterday that I was walking in to admitted students’ day! I remember the pit in my stomach but also the excitement I felt. For the last four years I had been working day and night to get to this point. From volunteering to shadowing, studying for the DAT and keeping my GPA up, I had been giving 100% to become the most competitive applicant I could be. I was lucky to receive multiple interviews and acceptances, but after my University of Buffalo interview I knew this was where I wanted to spend my next four years! Admitted students’ day my first taste of what life would be like in dental school. I walked into the ballroom feeling like I had accomplished everything I had been working for; I finally made it! As I talked to current students, it began to hit me and I discovered what the next years would really entail. I recently had the biggest accomplishment of my life but the next challenge was waiting right around the corner, making it through dental school.

The truth is that I was comfortable. I had just moved back home and was managing my favorite boutique. Life was easy and I was thoroughly enjoying every part of it. Although dental school had been my plan for quite some time, my semester off and taste of freedom was enough to rethink everything. I realized the truth of what my life would look like over the next four years; It was going to be a lot of work, time and dedication. I would be taking 30 credit semesters with the most in depth science courses imaginable. It wasn’t going to be like undergraduate where I could have a job, dedicate my time to a nonprofit or even enjoy going to yoga every day. My life would be absorbed by being a dental student. Was I really ready for this type of commitment? I didn’t have a solid answer, and until I walked into my first week of dental school I still wondered if I had made the right choice. I was lucky to make amazing friends on day one and as time I went on, I started to meet even more of my classmates. It was the first time I had been surrounded by so many individuals excited about dentistry! This excitement started to ease my mind and reassure me that going to dental school was the right choice. I started all new classes like gross anatomy, pre-clinic courses and histology. There was no doubt it was as hard as I thought it was going to be, but my dedication for learning made even the most challenging of courses catch my interest. By the end of my first week, I knew I had made the right decision by attending UB Dental. I truly had a passion for dentistry and was excited to start this new journey in Buffalo. It wasn’t going to be an easy road ahead, but I was ready to take the challenges head on and work towards becoming to best dentist I could be.
